The United States announced that it will grant Sri Lanka with $39 million as military funding to enhance its maritime security. China has developed various strategic holds on the island of India Ocean, which may threaten Sri Lanka.

In regards to the congressional approval, the US embassy in Colombo said that the State departments will offer funds as “foreign military financing.” It continued that “we look forward to discussing with the government of Sri Lanka how this contribution can support our Bay of Bengal initiative and Sri Lanka’s humanitarian assistance and disaster response priorities.”
