Police And Politicians Join Hands In Riots In Sri Lanka

Kandy, March 26- Srilanka Podujana Peramuna or the SSP was behind the recent riot that took place earlier this month in Kandy of Sri Lanka according to the Sri Lankan media sources. The riot was believed to be a handiwork of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his associates. The activists were believed to be the close associates of Rajapaksa. Thousands of anti-muslim activists destroyed mosques, homes and business organization run by Muslims. The Sri Lankan Government had to impose an emergency to bring back law and order situation in the country.
Eyewitnesses told the media that many officials of the paramilitary force, the Special Task Force were responsible for the incident and the video footages of the riot also corroborated their statements. A.H. Ramees, a Muslim cleric described the riot as horrible and told the media about the severity of the incident. He added that the attackers treated them as terrorists and constantly abused them and mercilessly beat them. Ruwan Gunasekara a, spokesperson of the National police force told the media that a thorough investigation would be conducted to find out the exact role of the police officials in the riot. Ranjith Madumma Bandara, the Law and Order Minister said at a press conference that he was highly convinced that former president Rajapaksa was behind the riot. The violence in Kandy started after a Buddhist truck driver was attacked by four Muslim men on 22nd February. Jayadeva Uyangoda, a political analyst of Sri Lanka has condemned the incident and opined that SriLanka is predominantly a Buddhist nation and it is quite easy to mobilize people against Muslims. The Sri Lankan Government assured the general public that it would not spare the offenders and they would get exemplary punishments.
