The United States-made submarine carrying over five tons of cocaine was seized in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America, said the US Coast Guard.
According to an official statement published on September 24, the 39-feet-long vessel had previously been detected by maritime surveillance.
On September 1, the Coast Guard has boarded the self-propelled submersible in international waters with the support of the Colombian Navy, said the statement.
The Coast Guard on-board has discovered around 5.4-tons of cocaine, with a market price of over $165 million.
During the operation, four suspected drug smugglers were also detained.
Besides planes and swift boats, the South American drug cartels, mainly from Colombia – use quite basic submarines to transport drugs to Mexico and to the United States of America.
The US Coast Guard has announced the seizure of 13-tons of cocaine in July from multiple operations throughout Latin America.
