US Representative Katie Hill stated on Sunday that she was resigning from Congress. Her announcement comes amid the ongoing investigation by the House ethics committee over an alleged relationship of her with a congressional staffer.
The 32-year-old California Democrat, Hill was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018. She posted her resignation letter Twitter claiming she believed it best for her constituents, community and the country.
According to the media reports, Hill had admitted that she had an “inappropriate” relationship with a campaign staffer when she was working for Congress but she has denied the fact that she had a sexual relationship with a staffer in her office.
On Wednesday, the ethics committee said that it was “aware of public allegations… (that Hill) may have engaged in a sexual relationship with an individual on her congressional staff,” and said it was investigating.
She apologized in the letter for “mistakes made along the way” but also lamented a “smear campaign”. Hill is going through a divorce and has blamed her husband. She said that she was seeking legal options after media outlets published intimate photos that purported to be of the lawmaker.
Hill said, “Having private photos of personal moments weaponized against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy.”
“It’s also illegal,” she added.
Hill has served the House Armed Services and Oversight and Reform Committees as a vice-chairperson. She achieved win over the incumbent Republican Steve Knight in a district north of Los Angeles that helped the Democrats win control of the House.
The election analysts at the Cook Political Report are observing her district as one of the most competitive in the country. Although her resignation may help the Republicans to win back her seat in November 2020, they still face an uphill climb in their effort to regain control of the House.
