On Saturday, the United States President Donald Trump said that he made the contradictory decision to recognize Israel’s 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights after taking a quick history lesson during a conversation over a different issue.
While speaking in Las Vegas’ Republican Jewish Coalition meet, President Trump said that he made the instant decision during a discussion with his top Middle East peace advisers, including the country’s ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Trump said, “I said, ‘Fellows, do me a favor. Give me a little history, quick. Want to go fast. I got a lot of things I’m working on: China, North Korea. Give me a quickie.”
Recounting the conversation, the US President asked, “How do you like the idea of me recognizing exactly what we’re discussing?”
Donald Trump typically demands short sharp briefings and is popular for his colorful retelling of stories, said Friedman was surprised, “like a wonderful, beautiful baby,” and asked him if he would actually do it.
Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited US President Trump. On March 25, President Trump has signed an order official granting the US recognition of the Golan as Israeli territory, a departure from decades of country’s policy. The move, which the US President has announced in a tweet days before, was widely considered as an attempt to develop Netanyahu, who is up for April 9 re-election.
In 1967 Middle East War, Israel has captured the Golan and annexed it in the year 1981, with a motive not to recognized internationally.
On Saturday, Trump has described the swiftness of his decision and said, “I went – ‘BING!’ – it was done,” adding that “We make fast decisions. And we make good decisions.”
When the US President has asked the crowd, who will win Israel’s election- there were roars of “Bibi”, he replied, “I think it’s going to be close. Two good people.”
Against former top general Benny Gantz, Netanyahu is fighting for his political survival.
Republican Megadonor Sheldon Adelson is allegedly gravely ill, watched the statement in person.
As the US President started speaking, three protestors stood on their chairs as shouting, “Jews are here to say – occupation is a plague.” the remaining crowd drowned them out quickly, with chants of “USA! USA!” They were removed physically by the security guards as well.
“He is going back to mommy and he will be reprimanded,” President Trump said of the protesters that “She gets it.”
