Test4-‘Aadhaar’ chosen as Oxford Hindi dictionary’s word of 2017

Even for someone who has been living under a rock, the word ‘Aadhaar’ might not seem like an unfamiliar one, because chances are that you might have heard of the word at some point of time. Surrounded by controversies for most part of the year and often the punch behind the jokes on social media, the word is in news once again. However, this time, for all good reasons – it has made it to the Oxford Dictionary.

All thanks to the buzz and popularity it generated, ‘Aadhaar’ has now been chosen as the Hindi word of the year for 2017 by the Oxford Dictionary.

The announcement was made in the Jaipur Literature Festival in January 2018. Journalist Saurabh Dwivedi during the discussion said that while other words such as ‘Baahubali’, ‘Vikas’, Notebandi’, ‘Mitron’, ‘Gau-Rakshak’ were also in the race to become the word of the year but the widespread discussions and debates around ‘Aadhaar’ became the reason it was selected.

While most people were excited about the word being chosen as the word of the year, there was no dearth of Aadhaar jokes on Twitter especially since we have been linking everything – from bank accounts to phone numbers with Aadhaar. Everyone in Twitterverse seemed to unanimously agree that “Aadhaar had successfully linked itself to Oxford.”

Of course, it’s not like there was a lack of Aadhaar jokes and memes on social media but the Oxford honour has only given a new dimension to the entire thing.
