David Goffin, world rank 10, managed to survive a scary loss and fight back into the tennis tournament in the second round against Marcel Granollers from Spain.
Goffin was down to 5-1 in the first set and Granollers, world rank 129, initiated the game with a flying start. However, later during the second set followed by the third, David recovered back his form and went ahead to win it from Marcel by 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
While talking to reporters Granollers expressed his disappointment from losing the match. He said that it’s hard when the win is so close but the game just slips away from hands and he can’t even think of anything positive after losing the match.
Goffin will be joined by Spain’s Feliciano Lopez (defeated Dusan Lajovic by 6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri (defeated Ernesto Escobedo by 6-4, 6-3) in the round three.
Robert Carbelles Baena from Spain defeated Andreas Haider Maurer from Austria by 6-2, 6-4 and facing Rafael Nadal, world rank 1 and 10 times winner of the tournament, on Wednesday.
Serbian Novak Djokovic, former world rank 1, will play against Slovak Martin Klizan on Tuesday in the second round after he received the late wildcard entry in the tournament. He was away with a long injury after he got knocked out in a match in Monte Carlo.
Novak told during a news conference that he didn’t have any plans on attending the Barcelona Open. But after finishing in Monte Carlo last Thursday, he decided to request an invite and an entry in the tournament.
For now, he is not much concerned about his shoulder injury and just wants to play the tournament, since he hasn’t played much tennis this year.
He also said that in over a year, he played his first tournament in Monte Carlo recently and as he is not experiencing any pain so far, he is quite happy about it.
It is possible that Djokovic may meet Nadal during the quarter-finals, in case both of them win next two matches against their rivals in the Barcelona Open Tennis Tournament.
