Reliance JioPhone has taken India’s feature phone market by storm and it is now all set to have its own Facebook app from February 14. This new app has been developed exclusively for Jio KaiOS, the phone’s operating system and the move is said to further expand the reach of the social media platform to around 50 crore feature phone users in India.
Jio confirmed the news and said that the Facebook app on the JioPhone will offer a complete experience and all the major features like the news feed, photos, notifications, videos, and links to external content will be supported on the device.
Earlier, reports about the phone having its own version of Whatsapp were doing the rounds but there has been no confirmation about that. In December, Google announced a version of the Google voice assistant for the Jiophone at the Google for India event but that too has not rolled out yet. As of now, the JioPhone only provides support to the apps from the telecom player itself. The Facebook app will however, now be available for download from their App store.
In a press statement, Akash Ambani, Director, Jio said, “As promised, JioPhone will be home to the world’s leading applications, starting with Facebook. Jio, the world’s largest mobile data network, is built to empower every Indian with the power of data and JioPhone is an integral part of this Jio movement.”
“We are excited about our partnership with Jio and the opportunity to provide the best possible Facebook experience for millions of people using JioPhone. Working with partners like Jio, we want to make sure everyone, everywhere has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being connected,” Francisco Varela, Vice President of Mobile Partnerships, Facebook said in the press statement.
