2018 Commonwealth Games: P Gururaja wins silver medal in men’s 56 kg weightlifting

By matching his personal best of 249 kg P Gururaja won a silver in the field of snatch and overall lift. In the same event, three-time Commonwealth championship medalist from Malaysia Muhammad Izhar Ahmed broke his own commonwealth games record to win the gold.

Gururaja left wrestling and opted for weightlifting after he saw Sushil Kumar clinching the gold in commonwealth games of 2010, idolizing Sushil he also dreamt of winning a gold medal in the commonwealth games and repeat the feat in the Olympics as well.

In spite of finishing with a silver at Gold Coast on Thursday, Gururaja had been able to kick start the medal hunt for India giving a good opening to the commonwealth games of 2018 by clinching the silver medal in men’s fifty six kg category on the first day of the competitions here.

The twenty-five-year-old silver medal winner who is from Chitturu, Karnataka made matters tense when he failed in his first two attempts through the second one was a slightly dubious call made by the three judges. So at the final or third attempt he had no option but to try for 138 or else he would have been placed in the last position in the tally owing to his only snatch lift of 111 kg.
