West Bengal developing inland river water transport

Kolkata: State Government all set to develop inland river water transport to improve inland water transport. The proposed plan was recently approved at the state cabinet. The semi-autonomous body would be set up to function under the state transport department that will look after the entire inland water transport related activities. A senior official said “ The Transport department is working on a number of plans to improve inland water transport system. The new wing would help in overall coordination and functioning of water transport”.

The 12 rivers identified for the inland waterways transport are the Damodar, Bakreswar, Mayurakshi, Jalangi, Darakeswar, Ajay river, Icchamati, the Ganga – Bhagirathi stretch, DVC canal, and the Sunderban waterways. The official pointed out transportation cost by water was less than those by road or rail. Besides, domestic cost of cargo transportation will also increase.

Irrigation and Waterways minister Rajib Banerjee will be focusing on properly dredged to make them navigable. Sources reveal that security level would be headed by the wing and the state government would be creating over 130 new posts to set up the wing.
