Vijayawada: Paediatric Cardiologist Dr. Vikram and a team of doctors from Andhra Hospitals successfully performed a complicated heart surgery on a 21-day old baby who weighed 750 gram on the day of the procedure. The baby gradually recovered and is now three months old, weighs 1.25 kilograms and able to breathe on his own said doctors.
On Tuesday, the head of Children’s service wing Dr. PV Rama Rao told reporters that the boy was born prematurely only after six months of gestation and was admitted to the hospital with multiple complications when he was 11 days old.“The boy was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus with Pulmonary Hypertension, a type of congenital heart disease, and we provided ventilator support in a neonatal intensive care unit for ten days,” Dr. Rao added.
“A team of pediatric cardiac surgeons performed surgery on the boy after three weeks of his birth and he was kept on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) respiratory support machine for three days,” said Dr, Rao
Ratna Kumari, the mother of the infant said “We hail from Narasapuram in West Godavari district and doctors there said they cannot save the boy who was born in the sixth month of pregnancy, weighing just 750 grams. However, the doctors in Vijayawada took the case as a challenge and saved my son,”.
