Kolkata: Heavy traffic jams have been seen near airport routes, potholes, water logging and illegal parking contributing to crippling jams on VIP roads and Jessore Road, regularly forcing passengers to the airport to show up late for their flights. The scene has worsened so much that airport authorities demand the elevated corridor, the correspondent took a stock of the roads leading to the airport to find out the reason behind the chaos.
According to the sources vehicles are parked in no parking areas near the Kaikhali crossing and in front of the road leading to one – way flyover that takes traffic from VIP Road to the airport. In such places “No Parking” sign has neatly installed but in the absence of any policemen, hundreds of cars, bikes and mini trucks are left by the sides of the road, leading to traffic snarls on the airport – bound flank of the road. “ The problem gets aggravated with app cabs and several government vehicles waiting at the begging of the flyover approach road. We have alerted the police but to no avail”, said an official.
The condition of roads is worst near VIP road to Airport gate no 1. Adding woes to commuters, a portion of Jessore Road between airport Gate 2.5 and Gate 1 has been cordoned off for the laying of an underground water pipeline. “ The roads here so bad that vehicles are forced to crawl along the road. The authorities claim nothing can be done till after monsoon,” said a policeman at Gate 2.5. “ The Proposal for a foot overbridge at Kaikhali is yet to be finalized,” said a Bidhannagar traffic police.
