On Tuesday Thane police arrested top bookie, involved in running a multi-crore betting racket online from Mumbai and other states of India.
Thane police’s Anti-extortion cell performed the Raid on commercial premises in Dombivali area of Thane, capturing various mobile phones, laptops and sheets which were used to place bets on the IPL match held this year.
Later after arresting primary bookies, Thane police revealed that Sonu Jalan- alias Sonu Malad was the topmost bookie and a kingpin of this racket.
He had started an online betting system for this season in which links of matches were sent from social media which diverts the police and other agencies to caught hold. In this system, parties who were interested placed bets and confirmation was being received through calls from the Dombivali-based commercial premises, one of the places Jalan kept to invite bets from various places across the country. Assisting working men from Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Afghanistan as well as Europe he was also being added in the gang of Dawood Ibrahim, Pakistani betting mafia.
In India Jalan organized his centers in Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad.
Jalan was said to be very closely associated with the Dawood Ibrahim gang’s ringleader Sunil Dubai, who controls the mafia of bidding.
Jalan had also contributed a huge sum every month to a chit fund run by Sunil Dubai. His name also highlighted up in IPL spot-fixing scandal but he was not stopped from running the business.
Jalan is said to have set up an empire worth hundreds of crores of rupees and have also invested a large amount of it in construction and hospitality in Gujarat and Mumbai.
