Maruti storms ahead with its zealous plan of electric automobiles

If everything goes as per plans, Suzuki will probably be the first car maker to make electric automobiles with parts supplied regionally like lithium-ion batteries.

Suzuki Motor Corp., the source product of India’s largest car manufacturer, has a target to manufacture as many as thirty-five thousand electric automobiles per year in India beginning 2020-21 (FY 2021), when it launches the first of these cars in the country, two people who are related with the matter said.

“Suzuki will venture into the electric vehicle market quite late compared to some of its competitors. That’s why they wanted to make sure the foray into electric should be sustainable and gradually gain volume. The battery plant was crucial and now the management has internally decided on thirty-thousand to thirty-five thousand units per annum from financial year twenty-one,” said one of the two people, appealing for being unnamed. A mouthpiece for Maruti Suzuki denied to  “give any guidance”.

If everything goes as per plans, Suzuki will probably be the first car maker to make electric automobiles with parts supplied regionally like lithium-ion batteries.

“As of now, the target is to get approximately two percent of sales in 2021 but the infrastructure that Suzuki is creating for electric vehicles will help them hit the ground running. None of the other manufacturers as of now have any such plans,” quoted by the first person above.

Suzuki will get the technology supplied by Toyota Motor Corp. and Denso Corp. for the growth of a condensed and ultra high-effective motor for India and other global markets. Suzuki also has a trilateral joint venture with Denso and Toshiba to establish a lithium-ion battery factory in Gujarat.

The plans of Mahendra are more zealous. It intends to manufacture sixty-thousand electric automobiles per year starting from 2020 as it looks to gain from its first-mover advantage. “Our electric vehicles story is poised to take off,” said Pawan Goenka, managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
